Zurich, Switzerland (4E Sports) – The FIFA has unanimously approved plan to expand World Cup to 48 teams, which will be first implemented in the 2026 edition of the event.
The decision was reached during the meeting of the world football’s supervisory and strategic body in Zurich.
According to FIFA, the 48 teams will be divided into 16 groups of three. The top two teams from each group will then advance to a 32-team knockout stage.
This was the first time FIFA has introduced changes to the World Cup format since 1998.
“We have to shape the football World Cup of the 21st century,” said FIFA president Gianni Infantino , who suggested the expansion after he was elected to the position last year.
According to FIFA, further details regarding the competition, including the slot allocation per confederation, will be discussed.
